COLORS & PATTERNS-I am always surprised at how many people do not know that Dachshunds are in many colors, and patterns: the most popular being red and black/tan. There are also chocolate, chocolate & tan, blue & tan, fawn (isabella) & tan, black & cream, cream, wheaten, and wild boar Dachshunds. And several patterns brindle, sable, dapple, double dapple, and piebald. These are all recognized by AKC.
SPECIAL SKILLS- Family pet/Companion, Hunting
LIVING ENVIRONMENT- These dogs are Excellent pets for an apartment or house, in the city or country.
TEMPERAMENT- These dogs are full of life, and always investigating something. Very intelligent, courageous and loyal to their owners.
WITH PETS:For the most part yes. It is always better to introduce at a young age. Dachshunds are known to be bossy, and territorial.
WITH CHILDREN: Yes, when their first experience with a child is good and when raised with children who dont abuse them. long-haired are known to be more gentle and easy going. wire-haired are good, smooth are fairly good.
WITH STRANGERS: Most of the time very friendly, but their loud and high pitched bark will sometimes fool you.
WATCH DOG-Yes, they have a very loud bark
TRAINING-Long-haired are said to be easier to train than smooth-haired. But they all require alot more patient and consistency than most breeds.
CARE & EXERCISE- Dachshunds are very easy to care for they don't require much, just a weekly teeth cleaning, clipping of the nails, cleaning of the ears, and a bath from time to time. The also have little or no body odor. Regular exercise is important as some Dachshunds have a tendency to put on weight and become lazy. This can lead to health problems.
AVERAGE LIFE SPAN- 12 - 16 Years
HEALTH ISSUES-Prone to disc problems - Regular walks are good to help your pet from becoming overweight, try not to let your pet jump from heights. It is also good if you have stairs to carry your pet up them. Stairs are one of the worst things for a Dachshunds back. They can also be subject to genetic eye diseases and skin problems.
